Meeting Program:  Our program committee introduced a Rectangle Challenge and presented lots of variations on the 9 patch block, along with many projects and samples graciously provided by our members for everyone to get ideas and inspiration for their own project. Below are the details of the challenge:

Here’s a fun idea to get our brains thinking, our hands and sewing machines busy! A challenge of rectangles and squares. Grab your stash and put something fun together!

There will be prizes and ribbons for the Challenge, gift certificates to HomeMade - $25 for first prize,  $15 for second, and $10 for third.

CAMACO Rectangle Challenge

·     Project should be 80% rectangles and squares.

·     Style can be traditional or modern.

·     Must be completed by the June 12th CAMACO meeting.

·     Project should be small – including but not limited to coasters, pin cushions, pillow covers, place mats, table runners, wall hangings, small quilts.

·     Two month completion window should be considered when deciding your interpretation of small, but suggest no larger than crib size.

·     Name the project!

Next meeting’s notes: Bring any color fat quarter for the ways and means fat quarter raffle. Terry Kramzar will be our guest speaker.

Charity Tote Bag

Print fabric 64”x20”

Two contrasting strips   2 ½” x 42”

Fold the print fabric in half WRONG sides together so the piece measures 30 x 20
Use one of the contrasting strips and sew it across one of the 30 “sides of the rectangle.
Press and turn to the right side.  Top stitch in place and trim off excess If you wish to put on an outside pocket make it and sew it to the bag before the next step.

Fold the rectangle in half again to make it 16 x 20 WRONG sides together.  Sew a 1/8th  inch seam on the two raw edge sides.  Turn wrong side out and re-stitch the same seams 3/8th inch to seal the seam so there are no raw edges.  (French seam)
Mark the two bottom corners with a diagonal line measuring up2 ½” from the corner and across the bottom from the corner. Fold the bag so a triangle is formed. Stitch across the triangle on the drawn line to form the bottom of the bag.

Press the remaining contrasting strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, open and fold in the two long sides to the center and fold again pressing well.  Top stitch on both sides of this piece to make the handles for the bag.  Cut in half.  Measure in from the outer edges 3” for handle placement and sew to bag. Note if you want a firmer handle use a piece of interfacing or batting inside.

Bag is done and lined all in one large piece of fabric.

Respectfully submitted…Denise~
