November 2016 Meeting Minutes

 CAMACO QUILT GUILD MINUTES
                                               November 9th, 2016

The meeting was called to order by our President, Doreen D at 6:55 pm following a great " Thanksgiving Dinner".
Our guests for the evening were two representatives from CASA.

Our Treasurer, Karen M, was unable to attend , so Doreen deferred the Treasure's report to the next meeting,

Diane D thanked Doreen and all the attendees of the Retreat who assisted her physically to be able to attend. She encouraged anyone who has reservations about attending in the future, to reconsider. She stated that "it was not only possible to  attend, but she enjoyed a weekend with friends sewing."

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Name Badge: Members were reminded to please sign in. Three dollars were collected in fines.

Charity: Tonight we will have our Parade of Quilts for CASA.

Photography: Denise took pictures last meeting and will bring them next meeting for pick up.

Program: Diane  D reminded us that this year's Christmas Exchange is a hand made gift bag. It does not have to be a Christmas one. If you wish to participate, place your gift bag in a paper bag and include your name so the receiver will know who to thank.
She reminded us that the Show & Tell that night will be Christmas items only. They can be either a new or old item.
We will also play Jolly Bingo. Bring your fat quarters to "ante" up and hopefully, beat Shirley and make "a haul" of fat quarters!
***Diane also encouraged people to sign up for next year's Program Committee. Remember two speakers are already signed for 2017, so you can concentrate on "paying it forward".***

Sunshine: Flossie announced for anyone not aware, that Janet Blackmore, a member, passed away. Several members attended her Memorial.Janet will be missed.

Ways & Means: The Committee "worked" the room, collecting $52! Joyce Heinemann was the winner. Clare also reminded us that we will hold our Chinese Auction next month, "so bring your money".

Refreshments: We were reminded that the next meeting will also be our Cookie Exchange.  If you wish to participate, bring one dozen for refreshments and one dozen to exchange.

Blog: No report.

OLD BUSINESS

Doreen announced that everyone had a great time on the Retreat. She encouraged  all those who have never gone to consider doing so next year. She also reminded everyone that we do share rides, so please do not let that be a deterrent.

Remember we have an "open sew" here at the Millman Center, November 15th.

***Also remember, Anne Is collecting Hobb's UPCs so we can purchase more batting for the Guild at a discount.***

NEW BUSINESS

Doreen announced that she has spoke to the Hotel about next year's Retreat and if all are in agreement, she would like to propose a motion for the Guild to pay a $500 deposit for next year. A motion was made, seconded and approved  to return to the Continental next year and to pay the deposit. The probable dates would be October 19th-22nd.

The meeting was adjourned and followed by members of CASA  explaining their organizations purpose, advocating for foster children. In Cape May and Cumberland County there are over 1000 children in foster care. Presently, CASA has about 500 volunteers, but their goal by 2020, is to have a volunteer for each child. They are making strides. They encouraged anyone interested to take the course and get certified, it is a "very satisfying" experience. The "Parade" consisted of 83 quilts. Way to go ladies!

***Our next meeting is December 14th.....our Christmas meeting. Bring your fat quarters, money, cookies and gift bag if participating.

PROGRAM: Diane reminded us of the Jelly Roll Race Saturday, EMay 21st at the Green Creek Fire Hall, 9am-4pm.  She also reminded all those participating in the Masterpiece Challenge, that
they should have exchanged their quarters tonight and their Masterpieces are due next meeting for judging.                                                                                                                                            Diane Dunwoodie also said the Committee has approached two speakers for 2017, in light that you have to plan that far ahead to schedule these types of speakers. (It will also help out next years' Committee and hopefully, they will pay it forward).
The first speaker is Michelle Hiatt from sewonthego.net. She would speak at our September 13th meeting and do a workshop the next day, September 14th. The second speaker is Jane E.Hamilton from Hopscotch Designs (www.JanesQuilts.com). The date discussed was May  10th, with a workshop May 11th. Jane is from Kennett Square and her topic is how to create your own quilt designs.
Michelle Hiatt was approved by the group, while Jane Hamilton was deferred, so people could access her web page, to see if there was enough interest in the topic.

OLD BUSINESS:
Doreen started that Judy, Kathy and Diane Maguire were collecting deposits due tonight for our Retreat to Lancaster, October 20th-23rd. Booklets with directions were handed out to those planning to attend and if there are any questions, please call Doreen or Bernie. Doreen also reminded us the balance owed is due at the September meeting, depending on your number of roommates
Flossie did look into acquiring CAMACO tote bags and cardigans. The totes are $20 and come with red or blue handles, I believe. The cardigans are $25 and come in white, gray navy or pink. She had a sample to try on. If interested, let her know (she prefers cash).
Doreen again challenged us to participate in the Battle of the Guilds in the Pillow Case Race for Cancer. It will be held at the Hammonton Fire Hall, September 11th. Remember, kits will be provided, you just have to bring your "weapons" (sewing machines, sergers, irons, etc.). Game prizes, trophies and refreshments provided.

Clare also reminded us she needs all entries for the Cold Spring Show by June 25th at the latest. Entry forms were available on the side table.

Doreen also made available business cards from the new fabric store in Vineland, A Fabric Outlet and Gifts. They do offer a 10% discount for Guild members. Eleanor added that JoAnn's and Pin Cushion also gives 10% discounts to Guild members.

An announcement was made that the Cape May Garden Club's Show would be held Saturday, May 13th.

Bernie had chances for OBATS quilt to be raffled off soon.

Due to the fact that the Millman Center  will be needed by the Township the night of our June meeting, we will meet the following week, June 15th, at our regular time.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45, followed by Show & Tell.
Diane Dunwoodie then instructed us on how to make a three dimensional block. It was fun and easier than originally thought.

2016 Guild Challenge

Masterpiece Challenge

This challenge is a celebration of the great artists and the masterpieces they have created that we all honor and revere today in our museums and art galleries, along with honoring our own love of quilting and the masterpieces we create with our hands.

All those wishing to participate must form into groups of 4.

You will choose a masterpiece painting to everyone’s liking.
Photo copy the image 5 times.  Each person in the group should receive a copy and the 5th copy which needs to be approximately 14”x20” should be cut into 4 equal size pieces.  You can do this any way you like. Give one of the 4 equal pieces to each member of the group.

Duplicate your section as accurately as possible using the same colors and shapes etc.  You must do this four times so that each member of the group will receive a piece.

When all pieces are done you will keep one and give the other three to the other members of your group.

Sew the 4 sections you received from the other members together and  quilt, use borders to "frame", bind and add your quilt label to finish your masterpiece and make it your own.

Step back and admire your masterpiece!

There will be an unveiling at the June meeting and a first, second, and third prize ribbon awarded by a vote from the membership.

We will put them on display at the Cold Spring Fiber Festival at the end of the month.

Good luck and relax and enjoy the challenge!

  • Charity  Margareta proudly shared that we donated 127 dog beds to local animal shelters, 77 quilts to CASA and 20 assorted items to the Christ Child Society this year. What a generous guild we are!

  • Photography-  Anna reminded everyone there are pictures from previous meetings out, so take your pictures home with you!

  • Program-  Gail thanked Bev for playing Santa and providing the entertainment and gift exchange for this year’s Christmas celebration.

  • Sunshine - We are sorry to report that Connie A’s Mom passed away.

This meeting: We exchanged gifts and cookies to celebrate Christmas! A fun time for everyone!

New Business: Denise proposed we add a Blog Committee to our committees so that we can continue sharing our awesomeness and information worthy of sharing with each other on social media. It was met with no opposition and was added to our  guild committees  list for sign up.

Next meetings notes:  Membership dues are due by January 31, 2016! Please bring your dues with you to the meeting in January or send them with a friend so you can maintain your membership to our fun guild!

Signing off for the last time!  Looking forward to the journey with new leaders, Peace and Happy New Year!
